Barra da Lagoa: The Complete Guide — Beaches, Surf, What to Do and Where to Stay in Florianópolis

Your complete guide to Barra da Lagoa, Florianópolis: best beaches, surf spots, hiking trails, food, how to get there and where to stay. Find your wave here.

Barra da Lagoa is one of the most authentic and charming neighborhoods in Florianópolis — a fishing village tucked between the Atlantic Ocean, Lagoa da Conceição and the Atlantic rainforest. If you want to understand why Floripa is called “The Magic Island,” Barra da Lagoa is the perfect place to start.

In this complete guide you’ll find everything about Barra da Lagoa: beaches, surf, hiking trails, food, how to get there and, of course, the best places to stay.

What is Barra da Lagoa?

Barra da Lagoa is a neighborhood on the east coast of Florianópolis, about 25 km from the city center. Its name comes from the natural channel — the “barra” — that connects Lagoa da Conceição to the Atlantic Ocean. This rare position between lagoon and sea creates a setting of unusual beauty, with turquoise-blue water, dunes, trails and a coastal life few places in Brazil can match.

The community has deep roots in artisanal fishing. Many families still live off the sea, and you’ll see colorful boats moored in the channel, nets drying in the sun and fresh catch sold straight off the boat. This genuine atmosphere is what sets Barra da Lagoa apart from the island’s more touristy neighborhoods.

Barra da Lagoa Beach

Barra da Lagoa Beach is one of the most famous in Florianópolis — and for good reason. Nearly 2 km of open ocean-facing sand, with steady, rolling waves that work for surfers of every level.

The waves at Barra da Lagoa break over a sandbar shaped for long, controlled rides. If you’re learning to surf, you’ll be hard pressed to find better conditions anywhere in Florianópolis: the waves come in soft, consistent and with just enough power to give you that unreal feeling of your very first wave. For intermediates and advanced surfers, the central bank and the peak near the channel serve up more powerful waves and barrels on bigger swell days.

Beyond surfing, the beach is great for bodyboarding, stand-up paddle (the lagoon right next door is perfect for it), diving and simply soaking up the sea. The sand is clean, the water crystal clear, and there are lifeguard posts during the season.

Hiking Trails in Barra da Lagoa

Beyond the beach and the surf, Barra da Lagoa is the gateway to some of the most beautiful trails in Florianópolis.

Praia da Galheta Trail: it starts almost right in front of the hostel and leads to one of the wildest, most pristine beaches in Floripa — no car access, crystal-clear water and barely any crowds. About 20 minutes of hiking through dense forest. So worth it.

Praia de Moçambique Trail: one of the longest stretches of sand in Brazil, with more than 13 km of nearly deserted beach. The trail connecting Barra da Lagoa to Moçambique runs through a permanent preservation area and rewards you with stunning views. Around 40 minutes on foot.

Morro da Lagoa Trail: for those craving a little adrenaline and a panoramic view of the entire east coast of Floripa — including Lagoa da Conceição, the Atlantic Ocean and even the Serra Gaúcha mountains on clear days. Intermediate level, about 1h30.

The Barra da Lagoa Channel

The channel that links Lagoa da Conceição to the sea is one of the most photogenic spots in Florianópolis. Along its banks you’ll find the island’s best fish and seafood restaurants — the Azorean cuisine of Barra da Lagoa is a must for every visitor.

To cross from one side of the channel to the other, there’s a little ferry run by local fishermen for just a few reais — one of the most genuine experiences on the island. On the far side you reach the quieter part of Barra da Lagoa, with fewer tourists and even more of that fishing-village feel.

As night falls, the channel banks come alive with bars and restaurants serving oysters, shrimp, mullet and the famous bacalhau (salt cod) fritters. It’s the right rhythm of Floripa: slow, full of flavor and with a view of the sea.
