Florianópolis is so much more than pretty beaches. The Magic Island is packed with colonial fortresses, jaw-dropping lagoons, neighborhoods steeped in Azorean soul, and trails that drop you onto beaches that feel like the edge of the world. In this guide, we round up the top things to do in Florianópolis — the classics everyone knows, and the hidden gems only the locals can point you to.
Natural attractions in Florianópolis
Lagoa da Conceição
Lagoa da Conceição is the beating heart of the island. A saltwater lagoon ringed by sand dunes, Atlantic-forest hills, and a buzzing little town center full of restaurants, bars, and shops. It’s one of the most visited spots in Floripa — and for good reason. Beyond swimming and boat rides, the Lagoa serves up a lively nightlife and an energy that blends surfers, students, and travelers from all over Brazil.
Barra da Lagoa
Barra da Lagoa is where the lagoon meets the ocean. A fishermen’s canal, colorful boats, restaurants serving fresh-caught seafood, and a beach with waves made for surfing. It’s one of the most authentic corners of Florianópolis — with far less mass tourism than the north of the island. Check out our complete Barra da Lagoa guide for everything to see and do there.
Lagoinha do Leste
Considered by many the most beautiful beach in Brazil, Lagoinha do Leste is reachable only by trail (a 2-hour hike from Pântano do Sul) or by boat. There’s no infrastructure at all — and that’s exactly what makes it special. Crystal-clear water, a freshwater lagoon tucked behind the sand, and pristine, untouched nature. Pack everything you’ll need: water, food, and sunscreen.
Joaquina Dunes
The Joaquina Dunes are one of the most iconic sights in Florianópolis. A field of white sand dunes where you can sandboard down the slopes or simply explore — with Joaquina Beach on one side and Lagoa da Conceição on the other. Free entry.
Historic attractions in Florianópolis
Hercílio Luz Bridge
The Hercílio Luz Bridge is the most famous postcard in Florianópolis. Opened in 1926 and stretching 819 meters, for decades it was the only link between the island and the mainland. Today it’s a protected historic landmark, and it’s especially stunning lit up at night. A photo here is non-negotiable.
Florianópolis Public Market
The Public Market is the soul of the historic downtown. Built in 1898, today it’s home to restaurants, bars, and local-produce stalls. Lunch at the Public Market is a rite of passage for any self-respecting visitor — try the shrimp, the cockles (berbigão), and the smoked mullet. See more on what to do around town in our local Florianópolis guide.
São José da Ponta Grossa Fortress
Built in 1740 to defend the island against invaders, the São José da Ponta Grossa Fortress is one of the best-preserved historic sites in Floripa. It sits on the north of the island with views over the open sea — the contrast between the colonial cannons and the lush nature all around is striking. Open to visitors.
Santo Antônio de Lisboa
Santo Antônio de Lisboa is the most charming neighborhood in the center of the island. With its Azorean architecture, cobblestone streets, colorful old houses, and restaurants right on the North Bay, it’s one of the most photogenic spots in Florianópolis. Perfect for a lazy Sunday-afternoon seafood lunch.
Hidden gems in Florianópolis
Costa da Lagoa
Costa da Lagoa is a fishing community reachable only by boat or on foot. The trail is one of the prettiest in Floripa — a 7 km walk hugging the edge of the lagoon, passing waterfalls and rustic restaurants along the way. It’s the quieter, more genuine side of Lagoa da Conceição — and few travelers ever make it out there.
Naufragados Beach
At the far southern tip of the island, Naufragados Beach hides a historic lighthouse and one of the most dramatic landscapes in Floripa. You get there via a 2.5 km trail or by boat. The beach is small, sheltered, and blessed with calm waters — perfect for anyone looking to escape the crowds.
